Rebuilding Nepal: Badel
Country: Nepal | Destination: Everest | Activity: Trekking | Grade: 5 - Challenging

On April 25, 2015 an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Nepal. More than 100,000 homes were destroyed. And thousands lost their lives. We have already helped rebuild multiple homes and will continue to do so after the monsoons. Let us know if you wish to be connected with people who have joined us in the rebuilding projects in the past.

Your journey will begin in Kathmandu, the ancient capital city of Nepal. You’ll spend half a day exploring the historic temples and landmarks that encompass the bustling city, and see the some of the effects of the earthquake on many of the sacred ancient temples and historic sites.

Fly from Kathmandu to Lamidanda. From here, it is a three day walk into Badel. In Badel, we will work on rebuilding the homes of several of our staff and also those of others who wouldn’t otherwise be able to do it on their own. We will separately raise funds to rebuild the homes.

Badel is the home of many of our senior guides includes Buddhi Rai, Manju Rai, Debraj Rai, our junior staff including Gyanendra Rai and many of our porters. During this trip, we will be camping in tents and traveling with staff including porters and a cook who will prepare all of our meals.  During the days we will work on rebuilding efforts, and in the evenings we will have the opportunity to interact with the villages, hearing stories of their experiences.  A “shower” tent will be available where there will be a drum with luke warm water for bucket showers.

We will be working with an expert engineer to ensure the designs are consistent with the new government guidelines, are earthquake resistant, that local design has been incorporated.

"If you have an opportunity to join one of Crystal Mountain Trek’s rebuilding trips in Nepal, I cannot recommend it highly enough.  The warmth, welcome and connection our group all felt to the trek staff and the villagers there in Badel is something none of us will ever forget.  There was a sublime joy and rare peacefulness in the purpose of being there to simply assist in the rebuilding of two desperately-needed homes.  Although perhaps some of us struggled a bit physically to help half as much as our spirits wanted to, our efforts were rewarded with smiles, gratitude and friendship.  And it was so fun!  The Crystal Mountain team is deeply committed to helping communities, and we were all grateful to have been part of it.  I would return in a heartbeat."
