Reading list for prospective Nepal trekkers and travelers:

Trekking in Nepal - Stephen Bezruchka. This is an excellent book that explains what trekking in Nepal is all about and has a good description of popular trek destinations such as Annapurna, Everest and Langtang and some description of remote trek destinations such as Kanchenjunga, Makalu and Dolpo.

Nepal Handbook by Kerry Moran. Highly recommended particularly for Kathmandu Valley sightseeing.

Lonely Planet’s Trekking in the Nepal Himalaya by Stan Armington. This book has detailed day-to-day description of most destinations in Nepal.

Power Places of Kathmandu—Hindu and Buddhist Holy Sites in the Sacred Valley of Nepal. Photographs by Kevin Bubriski, Text by Keith Dowman. A beautifully photographed and informative guide to the Kathmandu Valley.

Trekking in Nepal by Toro Nakano. Great photos and routes you may not find anywhere else.  

Into Thin Air - Jon Krakauer.  A personal account of the 1996 disaster on Mount Everest.

Shopping for Buddhas – Jeff Greenwald

Himalayan Pilgrimage by David Snellgrove. Important reading for treks to Dolpo, Mustang and Manaslu. Out of print but available in many libraries and in Kathmandu.

Mustang, a Lost Kingdom by Michel Peissel. Important reading for Mustang trek.

Toni Hagen’s Nepal, by Toni Hagen. A classic book on Nepal with superb photographs by someone who traversed 14,000 km’s across the length and breadth of Nepal.

Himalayan Pilgrimage: A Study of Tibetan Religion by a Traveler Through Western Nepal by David L Snellgrove,

Lhasa by Perceval Landon. An account of the Country and People of Central Tibet and of the Progress of the Mission sent there by the English Government in 1903-4 (Vols. 1 & 2) with Introductory note by F E Younghusband.

Secrets of Tibet. The Chronicle of the Tucci Scientific Expedition to Western Tibet (1933) by Giuseppe Tucci & E. Ghersi. An account of Tsaparang, the ancient capital of the Kings of Guge.

Bhutan: Kingdom of the Dragon by Dompnier, R. A picture book, with good text on the geography and history of the country.

Lonely Planet Bhutan by Stan Armington. A travel guide book for Bhutan.

The Blessings of Bhutan by Carpenter, Russ and Blyth.  A great introduction to the people, customs and religion of Bhutan.

Birds of Bhutan by Inskipp, C. and T., and R. Grimmett.

From the Land of the Thunder Dragon: Textile Arts of Bhutan by Myers and Bean. A detailed account of the cultural history of the incredible textiles and the fascinating national garb of the Bhutanese.

Pommaret, Francoise. Bhutan. A colorful, practical guide with many astonishing photographs.

The Buddhist Handbook by J Snelling. An easy-to-read primer on Buddhism.

Beyond the Sky and the Earth by Jayme Zeppa. A volunteer educator's account of living and working in Bhutan for three years.
